Welcome to Box Springs Reserve in Moreno Valley, California, where the hills are home to wild burros that sometimes blend right into the landscape. At first, you may notice a donkey standing in the open. But if you stay a little longer, you may begin to see ears behind bushes, faces between branches, babies following close by, and small moments between animals that are easy to miss.
These photographs were created to follow the burros as they moved through the reserve, rested, wandered, stayed close to one another, and quietly watched the world around them. Some were easy to spot. Others almost disappeared into the dry grass, rocks, and brush.
This week's Look Closer experience is an invitation to notice the animals and the world around them more carefully. As you explore these photographs, look for tiny details. Notice their ears, eyes, fur, movement, families, and the way they seem to become part of the landscape.
Sometimes something isn't hiding because it is far away.
Sometimes we just need to slow down enough to notice it.
