San Jacinto Wildlife Area, in Lakeview California
Slow down. Look closer. Reflect.
Welcome to San Jacinto Wildlife Refuge!
Have you ever wondered what might be hiding among the trees, watching the world while the rest of us walk by without noticing?
Welcome to San Jacinto Wildlife Refuge in Riverside County, California! This beautiful natural area is home to a variety of wildlife, including birds, mammals, and other creatures that depend on its wetlands, grasslands, and surrounding habitats. Some animals are easy to spot, while others blend so well into their surroundings that we might never notice they are there.
As we explore, we'll discover beautiful mountain views, golden sunlight filtering through the trees, colorful evening skies, and a remarkable Great Horned Owl resting quietly among the branches. With its large golden eyes, distinctive feather tufts, and beautifully patterned feathers, this owl is perfectly adapted to its environment. Its coloring helps it blend into the trees, while its excellent hearing and eyesight allow it to detect movement and sounds that we might miss.
But finding wildlife isn't always about being in the right place at the right time. Sometimes, it's about learning what to look for. When we become curious about something, we naturally begin paying more attention to it. We learn its sounds, recognize its patterns, and notice details that may have previously gone unnoticed.
The same can happen in our everyday lives. When we direct our time, energy, and attention toward something meaningful, we begin recognizing opportunities and possibilities that we might have overlooked before. The world around us may not have changed, but the way we see it has.
These photographs invite you to explore nature with curiosity, patience, and an open mind. They remind us that there is always something worth discovering, especially when we take the time to pay attention.
So take a slow breath, let your eyes wander, and think about what you might discover when you begin looking a little closer.
Let's begin!
Look closer. Even when the light is hidden, it still finds a way through.
Can you count the birds floating across the water?
Wings stretched wide against the evening sky. What does freedom look like to you?
Look closer. Can you spot the little flash of red hiding among the plants?
What catches your eye first?
Look closer. Can you find the sun hiding among the trees?
One little bird, surrounded by mountains and golden light. Did you notice it?
Even as the sun begins to disappear, its warmth remains. What helps you carry a little light into difficult moments?
Notice how the sunlight reveals the mountain's ridges. How many different shapes can you find?
Take a deep breath, you are important.
Sometimes changing your perspective reveals something you didn't notice before. What stands out now?
The day grows quiet, but the sky still has something beautiful to share.
Look closer. How many shades of pink and blue can you find between the branches?
Even the smallest branches create beautiful patterns against the evening sky.
Look who's watching! Look Closer... Can you see how the owl's feathers help it blend into the branches?
Before the day ends, take one slow breath and appreciate something beautiful around you.
Now...take a deep breath and enjoy the rest of these photographs of my friend.
Thank you
⨠Before You Leave...
Did you...
Notice how the owl's feathers blend into the surrounding branches?
Look closely at the owl's golden eyes and distinctive feather tufts?
Take a moment to appreciate the changing colors of the sky?
Discover something in the photographs that you didn't notice at first?
Think about how paying attention can help you recognize new opportunities?
Consider something you'd like to give more of your time and attention to?
Remember: Sometimes, what we're looking for begins with learning how to notice it.
Every week I head into nature with my camera, never knowing exactly what I'll find.
Sometimes it's wildlife.
Sometimes it's a waterfall.
Sometimes it's something hidden in plain sight.
Thank you for slowing down and exploring with me today.
I'll see you on the next trail.
The world has always been beautiful. Thank you for taking a moment to notice it.
If one of these places spoke to you, you can bring it home.
We often look forward to the person we hope to become, forgetting to appreciate the person we are today.
Like the branches reaching across this softly colored sky, our growth may take unexpected directions. Some seasons bring new beginnings, while others ask us to be patient.
Not every branch grows at the same pace. Not every season brings the same changes. And neither needs to.
We are allowed to appreciate ourselves while still working toward who we want to become.
About the Print
Printed on aluminum for a luminous, dimensional finish that brings the photograph to life. Each metal print is scratch- and fade-resistant, easy to care for, and arrives ready to hang approximately ½" from the wall.
Each piece is made to order, helping reduce unnecessary production and waste.
There's something so meaningful about the sky putting on one final display of color before the darkness settles in.
The day isn't rushing to become tomorrow. It's simply coming to an end, making room for rest.
And perhaps we can learn something from that.
We don't always have to be growing, achieving, or moving forward. Sometimes, resting is part of becoming.

Sometimes, life takes more out of us than we expect. We become tired, discouraged, or disconnected from the things that once brought us joy.
We may even begin to wonder whether the excitement, confidence, or motivation we once had is still within us.
But look closely.
Between the dark silhouettes of the branches, a small opening allows the sunlight to shine through. Although much of the landscape remains in shadow, the sky is filled with warmth.
The light hasn't disappeared. It is simply harder to see from where we stand.
And perhaps we are not so different.
There may be seasons when our spark feels dim, but that does not mean we have lost the ability to shine again.
The Spark Is Still There is a reminder that our passions, dreams, and sense of purpose do not have to disappear simply because we are experiencing a difficult season.
Sometimes, all we need is time, patience, and the opportunity to reconnect with what makes us feel alive.

There is strength in knowing when to observe and when to act.
Perched among the branches, a Great Horned Owl rests quietly, its golden eyes attentive to the world around it.
There is no urgency in its stillness. No need to announce its presence. It simply observes.
In our own lives, we sometimes feel pressured to respond immediately, make decisions quickly, or have an answer for everything.
But not every situation requires an immediate response.
Sometimes, the most meaningful thing we can do is pay attention. To listen, notice the details, and give ourselves time to understand what is happening around us.
Being quiet does not mean we have nothing to say. Being still does not mean we are unaware.
There is strength in paying attention, wisdom in taking our time, and confidence in knowing that we do not have to react to everything.
Quietly Aware invites us to appreciate the importance of observation, patience, and thoughtful decision making. A reminder that awareness can help us approach life's challenges with greater understanding and intention.
A meaningful addition to counseling offices, wellness spaces, classrooms, and environments that encourage mindfulness, emotional regulation, and personal growth.
